Landesmuseum ZürichAusstellung | 02.03. - 27.06.2021Virus – Krise – Utopie

Utopias thrive particularly well in times of crisis. An exhibition at the Zurich State Museum examines this phenomenon - historically and currently. The corona pandemic shows our world that the usual normality is reaching its limits. The exhibition sheds light on current visions of the future, puts them in a historical context and connects them with current events. The exhibition focuses on Walter Jonas' funnel city as a historical example of utopia and shows two models and some sketches/drawings from the gta archive of ETH Zurich.

EXHIBITION Kosmos Dürrenmatt
Strauhof. Augustinergasse 9. 8001 Zurich
The exhibition shows the relationships between Walter Jonas and Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Dürrenmatt lived in the city on the Limmat in the 1940s and moved in the circle of the painter Walter Jonas. On the night of January 13-14, 1943, Jonas and Dürrenmatt carried out a literary and artistic experiment together with the art critic Dr. Werner Y. Müller: the book of a night. Dürrenmatt scratched his poems onto a copper plate (reversed), Jonas designed the 10 etchings. The edition was limited to three prints (it was wartime, money was in short supply).

Friedrich Dürrenmatt: Stoffe
Genetic edition of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's "Stoffen": An expanded edition and online presentation of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's "Stoffen" was created in the Swiss Literary Archives. Rudolf Probst and Ulrich Weber are working on a text-genetic edition that was published in collaboration with Diogenes Verlag, Zurich. In addition to the two published volumes of Dürrenmatt's "Stoffen" - "Labyrinth: Stoffe I-III" and "Turmbau: Stoffe IV-IX" (Zurich: Diogenes 1990), extensive texts and materials from the time when Dürrenmatt's autobiography was written are included in the edition. - In addition to biographical documents, there are also pictures that Dürrenmatt refers to in the "Materials" (and in the manuscript versions). Walter Jonas plays an important role here. Dürrenmatt was friends with Walter Jonas and cites a number of pictures by Walter Jonas. Here are F. Dürrenmatt's statements about Jonas' pictures in the "Stoffe":
"Of his pictures from that time, I remember a 'Fall of Icarus', which in my opinion is strangely mixed with that of Brueghel, and pictures of Ragusa on the Yugoslavian Adriatic coast. At the time I knew him, he was mainly an etcher; together with one of his acquaintances, he created the "Book of a Night", I designed the text, he etched it. Later, I designed a Gilgamesh drama, three scenes that he illustrated, using the aquatint technique, ..."
