Walter Jonas - artist. Thinker. Urbanist. Author: Stefan Howald. Publisher: Scheidegger & Spiess, Zurich. 352 pages, 52 color and 85 b/w illustrations. Price: CHF 59.- / € 54.00
The rediscovery of a visionary universal thinker: Walter Jonas (1910-1979) developed a late expressionism of his own as a young painter in Berlin and Paris. During the Second World War, important cultural figures met in his Zurich studio; Friedrich Dürrenmatt, among others, wrote his first literary texts there. From 1954, Jonas presented the first art programs on Swiss television; on trips to India and Brazil, he expanded his forms of expression as a painter. However, the versatile artist became known for his spectacular vision of a city of the future: from 1960, with his funnel house and the Intrapolis, he put forward an urban concept for discussion that combines social, ecological and aesthetic ideas. This biography by the publicist Stefan Howald, based on Jonas' extraordinarily diverse work, is illustrated with images of paintings, etchings, drawings and models of the Intrapolis.
